How I Used Social Media to Land a Job Within a Month

NISHARAGHAVAN-sourcecon

Job hunting won’t be a dreaded series of anxious and stressful experiences if you have a proper strategy in place. In this post, I would like to share how I used social media to land a job within a month.

You see, the norm is that someone quits their current job when they have another outstanding job offer in hand. But that was not my case. I was out of work for 5 years. Yes, It was a long break because of my immigration status in the United States! Read more about it here!

Luckily I received my work VISA and within a month after getting my VISA I was up in the game with three job offers and was able to get back to work because of my social media presence.

How I Used Social Media to Land a Job Within a Month

Below are 5 things that I tried on social media to land a job quickly.

Get your social profiles ready for the job search

First and foremost make sure you have the basics ready. Just like you update your resume, make sure your social media profiles are also ready to go. Have your LinkedIn profile 100% updated so that recruiters/hiring managers don’t need to have your resume anymore. Update the ‘About’ & ‘Bio’ section of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other social media platforms that you are on. Keep it professional, short and sweet. That way anyone landing on your social media pages will get to know a little bit about your professional background and they would want to know more about you.

Come up with a hashtag

Create your own hashtag. Use it for promoting your profile and letting people know that you are in the job market. I created my own hashtag #HireHRbuddy and that helped my audience tag and refer to it on any platform.

  • Use your hashtag to tweet the link to your LinkedIn profile, online resume or website for sharing updates on your job search.
  • Use your hashtag with other popular hashtags in your industry. For example, I used #HireHRbuddy with #HRjobs #Recruitment #Employerbranding #Dallas. (Always use the location that way recruiters in your location can see your tweet)

Write a blog post & promote it

Publish a blog post to share your pitch on why employers should hire you. Here is my blog post – what I wrote to attract those employers and hiring managers. ‘Nisha Raghavan @TheHRbuddy is in the Job Market finally! #HireHRbuddy’. It worked out for me. I was able to share more about my background, what I can offer and what I want to get into. It helped employers relate to me, my background and what I can bring to the table. If you don’t have your own website you can try LinkedIn’s publishing platform or About.me. And share the link to your blog post on all the social media platforms.

Announce it & share an update every day

Use social media to tell everyone that you are in the job market. Post an update and even add your current job as ‘Open for new opportunities’ or ‘Looking for new opportunities’. Once you share an update/change your job status, a notification will go to your entire network and it’s an easy and fast way to let everyone know. Be creative when you share an update. Share some pictures to showcase your job search journey with your audience. Pictures are worth more than thousand words and people will keep you in mind when they hear of any suitable opening.

Network Online & Offline

We all know networking is crucial during the job search period. Reconnect and refresh your relationships within your network on social media. Attend LIVE Twitter chats/podcasts/social media chats in your industry. Keep in mind not to ignore your local networking events, happy hours, those places you volunteered etc. You may never know who knows who. What I did to connect with the best and the brightest of the Talent Acquisition industry was to attend SourceCon conference and their networking events. The cover picture that you see on this post was from SourceCon’s networking event and I posted this picture and tagged everyone on social media to share my job search journey with them. I must say, each person shared some references and leads and they all were great.

Share your job search story below! Let me know if I can be of any help in your job search!
